I was recently in contact with a translation client from Canada who wanted to pay me via PayPal.
I now know that I am from a PayPal send only country: I cannot receive money via PayPal! I guess it's because of bureaucracy?

How do people from PayPal send only countries get paid for translation? Many countries are in this case: Peru, Lithuania, Mauritius, ...

Hi Avinash
The cost of international bank transfers was recently standardised between all Member States of the European Union. I am in the UK and here, a bank transfer into my account from another EU Member State costs £1 (one pound) if the amount is under £100, or £10 for any amount over £100 (even if it's a million !)
NB that is *within* the EU. I don't know what it is outside the EU.

Be careful, because even if PayPal allowed you to receive money, this is not a guarantee.
PayPal has recently closed my account with 90 EUR in it, because I am residing in a country
where receiving money through PayPal is not allowed.
What we do? well, Bank transfer is an option. Moneybookers is another option.

I pay US $ 39.00 to send an international wire transfer, no matter which amount.

Another disadvantage for the client: he has to make an appointment with a banker for the bank transfer in Canada. That's a huge waste of time, because you have to wait in line. At least half a day wasted. Maybe my client has access to internet banking but doesn't know/want this.
From Mauritius, I sent money to universities in France from the comfort of my home, with internet banking. It cost me between 10 to 20 extra Euros per transfer but it went through very fast.

From Mauritius, I sent money to universities in France from the comfort of my home, with internet banking. It cost me between 10 to 20 extra Euros per transfer but it went through very fast.
Also once the university sent me 26 Euros for a module, directly into my account, without charging me for the transfer. All I did was email them my IBAN, SWIFT (that I got from bank letters) and postal address.
I make it clear in my cover letters now that I only accept bank transfer payments, this way only those who can easily do this will ever contact me for projects.

Domestic wire transfers can be done from home via online banking. For international ones you have to go to the bank.

If I don't get PayPal, that would mean losing all potential clients from Canada and USA wow!
I have old childhood friends in USA. I think I'll make them accept payments for me via PayPal, then when there is enough money my friends can send it to me by wire transfer.
Must I form a company with my friends?

It is simply a question of trust - and I know from my own experience that colleagues of mine do the same. It works perfectly.
You should consider setting up an account to receive payments over the phone via credit card and debit card (VISA, Mastercard and such). It is not expensive, and especially private clients like this payment method a lot. As a matter of fact, to receive money will then cost you less than using PayPal (PayPal deducts some outrageous 3.8% from every international payment received, plus the currency exchange rate).

You can also receive payments via Western Union or Moneygram. There are fees associated with these transfers, but they can sometimes be cheaper than bank transfer fees (depending on the amount you are receiving and the countries involved).

Hi thanks Mykhailo, this 2co method gives more independence! I think I'll choose this one. Or similar websites if they exist.
Sometimes gaining time and simplicity is more precious than saving money.
EDIT:
Ok I've set up a trial account with 2co and created a product call Translation. I tried sending an invoice to my email address to see what it looks like. So far, when I click on the purchase link in the email I got an error code:
Parameter Error
A parameter error was encountered when attempting to process this sale.
Please notify the supplier so that this can be resolved as soon as possible.
I guess this error goes away when I buy 2co subscription. I'll try some other tests.
So does this system work like this:
0. I buy a 2co account for 49 dollars
For a client who wants to pay my translation via PayPal:
1.He receives the email, clicks on purchase link
2. He clicks on the PayPal button
3. He's asked to log into PayPal and an invoice appears in his PayPal with the price of the translation, he accepts the payment.
4. I receive the money on my 2co account after some days. I lose 5% of the amount to receive this money via 2co.
5. I transfer this money to my bank account for 15 dollars and I again lose 5% of the amount.
I cannot test this from here.
What I must check first of all is if bank accounts from my country can be linked to a 2co account.
