Source text - English Whether debating if AI-generated deepfake videos and ChatGPT will disrupt trust in elections or if social media platforms will be able to monitor violence-inciting misinformation, digital technologies remain a key topic for 2024 election campaigns around the world.
Digital campaign tools and tactics are especially difficult to monitor as political parties often outsource the work to opaque private companies, agencies, and consultants. In 2023, for example, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) worked with a freelance consultant to develop their campaign strategy, the Frente de Todos in Argentina paid Digital Ads S.A.S to develop their communications content, and Indonesian political parties hired “buzzer” agencies to spread their message on social media. Worldwide, there are over 500 political consultants, software providers, data brokers, and technology firms that make up the influence industry. This industry stands to profit from one or more of next year’s national elections, including in India, Indonesia, Georgia, Mexico, South Africa, the UK, Ukraine, and the US.
In the run-up to an election, political parties will use crafted messages to influence voters’ opinions and actions. Political actors rely heavily on platforms, such as Google Ad Library for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, India, and South Africa or Facebook’s political Ad Library for over 200 countries. However, candidates also pay private and covert consultants to design their social media strategy and broader online and offline campaigns. The companies in the influence industry collect data on our locations, our opinions, and our behaviors, create voter profiles representing what they believe to be our political interest and leaning, and, from this information, design campaigns, communications, and content to encourage us to, or discourage us from, voting for a certain party. Not only are these firms hired to produce informative and accountable campaigns, but they can also be hired to spread misinformation or create disruption within elections. For example, the infamous firm Cambridge Analytica, and their close collaborator AggregrateIQ, were hired to spread politically divisive and violent content through social networks to intimidate voters in Nigeria.

Marneuli, a region of Georgia, is home to ethnic Azerbaijanis and Armenians — all citizens of Georgia — across several of its villages where they live side by side, together with Georgians. The region and its co-populated villages over the years have become a prime example of peaceful co-existence.
Abzas Media traveled to Marneuli to interview Georgian, Azerbaijani, and Armenian residents who shared their stories of living side by side. What matters, say residents, is mutual respect and a language of understanding. Preferably at a table, with local delicacies.

Source text - English Elvira Elephant 1. Elvira Elephant has a dream. She wants to lay eggs. 2. But when she tries, she creates great chaos, and as often as she tries, she just can’t do it. 3. “I need to ask someone who knows how to do this,” Elvira thinks and sets off. 4. Finally, after a week, Elvira finds chickens… Elvira is very surprised. She always thought that chickens looked different. But quickly, she remembers point four of the rule of elephants: “Always be friendly!” 5. “Hello, dear chickens, could you tell me how I can lay eggs? Please!” “Well, we have never taught anyone except chickens to lay eggs. Breeding eggs will be easier, but I don’t think that much will come from it!” 6. “Could we still try?” “If you want…yes, I think we can try, but we cannot guarantee anything. Besides, it must be your greatest wish!” “It is!”
Translation - Italian Elvira l’Elefante
1. Elvira l’Elefante ha un sogno. Vuole deporre le uova.
2. Ma quando prova a farlo, crea un gran scompiglio, e nonostante i numerosi tentativi, non ce la può proprio fare.
3. “Ho bisogno di chiedere a qualcuno che sappia come farlo,” pensa Elvira, poi s’incammina.
4. Una settimana dopo, Elvira finalmente trova delle galline…
Elvira è molto sorpresa. Ha sempre pensato che le galline avessero un aspetto diverso. Però si ricorda subito del punto numero quattro del regolamento degli elefanti: “Sii sempre gentile!”
5. “Ciao care galline, potreste dirmi in che modo posso deporre delle uova? Per favore!” “Beh, non abbiamo mai insegnato a nessuno, tranne che alle galline, come si fanno le uova. Potrebbe essere più facile allevarle, ma non credo che ne verrà fuori qualcosa!”
6. “Possiamo provarci comunque?”
“Se vuoi…sì, penso che possiamo provare, ma non possiamo garantirti nulla. Tra l'altro, deve essere il tuo più grande desiderio!”
“Lo è!”
