I'm about to purchase a new laptop and would like feedback on whether, for Trados purposes, I would be best off buying one with Vista or with XP. I understand that Trados 2007 works only with Vista, but a lot of you have expressed dissatisfaction with this pair. I currently use Trados 2006 - is it worth upgrading to the 2007/Vista package? I'd like to upgrade to keep up with the latest developments, but not if it looks like I'll only run into problems. Do the two crash when running together? Wou... i use winxp, but have tried vista. i tried at least two versions of vista. both can't compete with xp in terms of speed. i think it's not a fair trade for just eye-candy features. if you want some real eye-candy, better use osx or even linux.

I don't know about Trados since I use Wordfast, however, in respect to Vista I've only heard bad opinions about it. IT people that I've talked with say stay away as far as possible from Vista - unstable system, very demanding on the computer, slow, just plain troubles. In a way, even M$ admits to this and is already thinking about releasing a new system sometime next year.

I use SDL Trados 2007 with XP on my laptop, with no particular problems. Trados 2007 isn't only compatible with Vista, it's pretty much the opposite: Vista is only compatible with Trados 2007

I work for a software editing company, and am freelance translator at home. I just bought a new laptop myself and went for the XP solution.
what I've seen from Vista till now is not very stable, though I have not tried Trados on it. My colleagues at the office all tried to install it and after a few days removed it, except those few who really need the latest OS.

Same will hopefully happen with Vista.
My advice : stick with XP for as long as you can, but make sure your new pc is up for Vista (you'll need to check the RAM, because Vista is heavier than XP and needs more memory to work). ▲ Collapse

I purchased a laptop running Vista (I cannot remember which version) some weeks ago. It was really very slow and after installing a couple of programs it has become even slower. I would suggest you purchase one with XP.

I worked in I.T. for fourteen years, and I'm very conservative about adopting new operating systems. Generally speaking, it's good to wait about a year after a company (especially Microsoft) introduces a radical rewrite of its OS.
There are bound to be compatibility issues in terms of existing software and especially hardware drivers, not to mention bugs of various sorts that they need time to work out.

I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago with Vista on it. Unfortunately most of the new PC,s in Greece come with VISTA on them and do not give the choice of a different OS. For anyone who wants to select hardware and software on his/her new PC, it costs too much... In my PC with XP I wasn't satisfied in security issues, I had alwas to download new antivirus and spyware programs (and one of these had its own virus on it!!!) and there was a damage in registries. MacOS X was another solution I looked at. I'm a longtime Mac user and love the MacOS, not only for its functionality but because it's more secure and stable than Windows.
I ultimately ordered a laptop PC because I could get a decent one for about $600, whereas a MacBook would have set me back $1,200 and then I'd still have to buy Parallels and a full version of Windows XP (another $300 total) to run Trados.

I've run Trados 7.1 in Windows XP. It works fine. But I switched to Vista and am still using Trados 7.1, with Word 2003 (Word 2007 is incompatible with 7.1). I've had no real problem with Vista, it works smoothly, shuts down and starts up faster than Windows XP, in my opinion. Windows explorer is better. All in all, with a few tweaks (open firewall for Workbench, repair installation for TagEditor) Trados 7.1 is up and running on Vista with no problems whatsoever.

I've recently bought a laptop with Vista and I run Trados 7.1 and Office 2007 on it, it works perfectly well and it did right from the start. I also have the same combination on a desktop with XP pro and it seems to me that both computers are as efficient with the same programs. My main concern with Vista was for PDF documents since I can't install Acrobat Pro with Vista. You may want to check if all the programs you want to use can be installed on Vista before you buy it.

It is extremely slow, it does not recognise even a simple USB memory stick, it takes days to successfully install a printer or scanner, and it simply is a big pain.
So if I were you I'd go for XP, without a doubt.

Vista might be a p.i.t.a., i.e. trouble-some, but I have simply not had any problem with it. My Canon printer and camera work fine under Vista, and so does about any program I use (Firefox, Thunderbird, Office 2003, Trados 7.1). I do not want to praise Vista, but it works as it should, as XP does.
To end the Vista/XP issue, I recommend that everyone use Linux for simple tasks (word-processing, web-browsing, music and videos). You might enjoy it!

The advantages and disadvantages will vary from one user to another. If you have all new hardware and software and tons of RAM, Vista is probably great.
For someone like me (with an ancient film scanner and other older peripherals, and Trados 6.5 with dongle authentication) it could be a disaster. So each person needs to research carefully before jumping into the deep end of the Vista pool.
