location of source and target boxes on screen Thread poster: maryrose

Hi folks
As a newcomer to Trados I wonder if I can do something about this feature which is irritating me like mad:
When I close a translated segmented so as to open the next, the source box is off the screen and only the target box is visible, so I have to scroll up every time to be able to see both. I can't believe that this is something one just has to put up with, but can't figure out how to fix it. Any ideas?

Do you use Trados with Word or do you use TAG Editor?
How is your screen set, ie is the Workbench above taking about 1/3 of the screen?
Which kind of view are you using in Word?
Do you show all not printable characters (expecially hidden text) in Word?
How big is the Word window? Maybe it is reduced by tool bars and so on?
Perhaps your scroll lock button is pressed?

Hi Christina,
Try this:
In Word (I assume you use Word + Workbench):
1. Tools - Options - View - format marking
2. Under Format Marking, unmark Hidden Text.
As my Word version is in Simplified Chinese, the wording might be a little different from yours. Hope this helps.
Good luck

Thanks Jerzy for your quick response.
First of all, having read your response and looked at my settings, I changed the layout from (sorry I don't know the correct English names, my computer's all in Italian)view print to normal and so far it seems to have done the trick.

So far so good with changing the layout. Could it have been so simple?
Many thanks.

TAG Editor was only one possibility.
But nevertheless, you should have Workbench visible, as it shows valuable information about changes in the text. For example you wrote a text with following sentence "The Mouse is green". And then you get a text "The Cat is red" - in Workbench you will see the new source text and a fuzzy match with coloured words Mouse, Cat, green and red - this helps to make changes easier and faster in order to adapt your fuzzy match.
If you do not show non printable characters, there is a danger of deleting or changing TAGs and segment delimiters. I would strongly advice you to show at least the hidden text, but even better ALL non printables. Get used to this, you will consider it helpfull afterwards.
A good way to organise your screen is to place Workbench at the top and resize it to the full screen width and approx. 1/3 of the screen height. Place Word beneath and resize it to take the left space.

OK, I'll try and get used to having all the codes visible, and also to have Workbench on top. That's clearly logical.
Thanks again for all your help.
