Less subtitling work during the summer?

Hi,

Given that TV series probably make up a lot of the work for a subtitling company, are summers a particularly slow time when work can generally be expected to be more scarce?

I also wonder if anyone has any experience with how long it generally tends to take to start getting assignments from Softitler after you have passed their test and completed the setup & training phase?

At least for me, spring-summer is the peak season for subtitling work.
I am interested to learn how it is for other people.

Hi Linda,

I work for Softitler too and I've been told that Summer time and Christmas are the busiest times. My work experience has confirmed the warning about Christmas. This Summer hasn't been that busy, at least for now.
As far as tests are concerned, it depends on the work flow, really. I was told that my test evaluation could take three weeks, but it took about two. After you have passed the test and your setup & training phase, it also depends on the workflow. Good luck and I hope I have been helpful enough.

Teresa

Thanks for the input. :) Aug 5, 2006

Thanks for the input, Cristiana and Teresa. I had thought the wealth of re-runs on TV and the lack of new TV series coming out would perhaps mean a slowdown during the summer.

I finished my setup (that is, I passed the test and did the installation and training) with Softitler mid-June, and so far I haven't received any assignments. I've found this a bit curious because my test was evaluated very quickly -- it took barely a week, I believe -- and the setup and training was likewise concluded very quickly.

From the time that you finished your setup, Teresa, how long did it take before you started getting assignments? Of course, I imagine it can vary quite a bit from language pair to language pair as well and, as you say, on the work flow.

It took me three weeks to get an assignment, after I passed the test and did the instalation and training. The thing is, I still hadn't finished the first assignment when I was sent another one! It never rains, but it pours. Sometimes you spend months without work and then they start to pour down on you.

Thanks. That gives me an idea of what to expect -- that is, the unexpected.

I'll have to hope it starts pouring soon, since right now I've got plenty of spare time. But with my usual luck, it'll probably start when I am busy anyway.
