Hi everybody

I'm interested in beginning to make subtitling and I really have no idea about it. I just know the most films I see on TV and in cinema are very badly subtitled.
I saw an agency was surging for subtitlers with special software. Can anyone tell me which software is used for that? Maybe the cost too? Kind regards. annette

Better to get trained and use the client's on-site subtitling set-up Mar 24, 2006

Greetings.

Because of the variety of software for subtitling, plus those need to adjust the encoding and timing (so that subtitled text matches the duration of the particular scene or shot), it is better to get trained and use the client's on-site ensemble for subtitling.

I do English > Arabic subtitling of DVDs and films for several media firms in Burbank and Hollywood.

I do English > Arabic subtitling of DVDs and films for several media firms in Burbank and Hollywood.

Each firm has its own distinctive set-up and internal practices for encoding and inserting its subtitles. A firm always includes time to provide the new translator/subtitler with technical training and initial mentoring & coaching needed to use the firms's equipment properly and with certainty in using the firm's preferred way.

Each firm also requires that all subtitling and related editing/re-coding, etc. be done on its own site there, for various reasons about technical features, legal coverage, and protection of copyright.

Before you plan going into subtitling, I would suggest you get experience in translation FOR subtitling: they are two very different jobs and I'm sure you could'nt possibly do the first one before having a huge experience in the second one.

Translation FOR subtitling is indeed quite special... timing, sychronization, adaption, localization, etc.

Take a look at divx@divx.com, for example, or all divx web sites.

You'll need SubRip, DVD2AVI, BSweet, Subtitle Workshop, Nero, among others softwares, some for free, some not. You'll need a huge hard disc, DVD devices, and a lot more.

I think it's the easiest one to begin with. If you have Fddshow installed on your PC you can see your movie subtitled directly on Windows Media Player, then you can even burn it... take a look at Virtual Dub and TMPGE softwares, they are easy.

Hi there, did anyone of you guys ever heared of poliscript, it is the most advanced software for proffesional subtitlers, with thanks, by the way I'm one of the proffesionals in this software
