Hi everyone
This morning I was contacted by another scammer, it's starting to be a weekly occurrence now... The person claims to be Helen Davis from Adecco Recruit. While this is a legitimate company, the email address she is sending her mails from is adeccoltd@zohomail.com - first sign of a scammer. They are offering £0.48 per word, second sign of a scammer. Telling me to get in touch via Telegram if I have any questions - third sign.
I was wondering if anyone else has been contacted by someone claiming to be from Adecco, it's the first time I've heard of them. I have, in the past few weeks, been contacted by individuals claiming to be recruiters from Translated and Welocalize who were also scammers. I already work for these agencies and know their SOPs. ▲ Collapse

I got it

Hi,
I didn't see your thread when I posted mine. I got the selfsame email this morning. I'm trying to understand what they're aiming to achieve with this. Are there people in the world daft enough to believe in 48 cents per word? Has such a rate ever been paid to any translator at any given time?
I might have considered applying if it said 10 cents per word until of course I'd seen the gmail account.

The way they work

I actually replied to a similar one last year just to see how they work. They send you a piece of the project to complete within a given time and tell you that you will be paid 'per piece'. Once you deliver your first piece, they will respond that it has been approved and provide you with a 'payment confirmation'. Here is where it gets interesting, they use a third-party bank for the payment as it is usually from overseas and then you need to make a payment into an account of that third-party ba... See more

Here is where it gets interesting, they use a third-party bank for the payment as it is usually from overseas and then you need to make a payment into an account of that third-party bank in order for your payment to be processed. For me, it was around 10% of the amount. Needless to say, I did not make a payment...
Those of us who have been around for a while will easily recognise this as a scam but I do feel sorry for someone just starting out in the industry thinking that they have hit the jackpot only to be conned out of their time and money. That is why I always do thorough research about the company making an offer before accepting any work from them. ▲ Collapse

Thanks for the clarification. I thought they were actually trying to provide translation services to their clients without paying the translators involved in the work. So translation has nothing to do with this? They're only after their money..

Those scams...
Mar 10
...will end very soon when finally the scammers realise that they deal with translators (and not with plumbers), which means with an underpaid class of remote workers working for peanuts with no money. The first scammers therefore are already starting to pay what they promise out of pure pity.
