I guess they do if they cause us to lose days and days fixing our computers and possibly losing data. Anyway, I thought I'd pass on the email I received from a hotmail address before I junk it. It was sent to my hotmail address, which I never use for professional purposes, and there's no link with ProZ.com other than the fact that I've clearly been selected as a translator, though I have no idea how that happened. The only change I've made is to blank out the name.

Dear Sir/Ma,

Good Morning to you and am T---- J----

Translators,Writer,Editor and Proofreader is needed urgently....If you are a translator check the document attach to this mail and let me know if you can translate it from English to Spanish,French,German or what is your language combination i mean from English to which language can you translate to.

But if you are a Writer,Editor and Proofreader get back to me so i can send you the document you are to edit and proofread?

So get back to me if you are available and i will like you review the document attach and let me know how much you charge per page or words.I will be waiting till i hear back from you.

Kind Regards,
TJ.

I love that "Dear Ma" The address given is Louisiana 70506. Whether or not it was an infected attachment, I'll never know as I didn't open it (called Adolescence.doc). It has all the hallmarks of a bogus email to me.

That's the small town of Lafayette, in the heart of the Cajun swamplands. There's not a whole lot to do there except chew sugarcane, wrestle alligators and send out scam emails to translators. As it happens, I'll be there this weekend, so I'll keep an eye out for suspicious-looking individuals on your behalf.

Best wishes

So, it's a scam rather than a virus! Jul 26, 2013

Thanks for the responses and sorry to have reposted about an already-identified scam. This one just seemed so vague about the job needing to be done that I never suspected they were actually expecting me to work for them. There's no way I would ever have opened that file, let alone replied to the email.

This Terry James (no reason for anonymity now) does indeed supposedly hail from Lafayette, Phil. Maybe you could trap an alligator this weekend and set it against this shark!... See more

Yes, Sheila, Ma is cute, except he forgot the ' because actually it's Ma'. So maybe he was thinking...Cajun does sound a little different.

Another part I consider amusing is the slightly confused but "cover-it-all" job description. They probably thought, hey, let's have us some catfish tonight...cover it all.

Scams are like buses Jul 27, 2013

You don't see one for ages, then they all come at once.

I received another one today, this time in my gmail spam box. Clearly of the same type, from Michael Sanchez, but this time through ProZ.com. But gmail is much better at handling these things than hotmail (much better at handling everything, in fact) and made it quite clear that many other people have considered it to be a scam.
