Hacked e-mail account Thread poster: Luis Arri Cibils

Dear colleagues,
My email account was hacked, and many friends and colleagues are letting me know that they are receiving spam from my msn email account (account name: Luis Arri). Please do not open any email you receive from that account, much less click on any attachment. I have now recovered control of the account and am checking whether any further damage was made. My most sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

I recognized what happened right away when I received such an e-mail from "you" earlier today. When an e-mail arrives with nothing more than a link, it usually means an account has been hacked. I have received such messages many times, and have had such messages sent to my account.

If so, I just fell for it. You have to crash your browser to get out of this loop. The email came from another ProZ.com colleague, though. With about 20 other colleagues in the address line.

I do not think it is the same. I do not recall ever exchanging e-mails with you. It seems the hacker was using the list of people with whom I had exchanged e-mails in the past. Also, from the emails that bounced (delivery notification status), the fake emails were sent individually (not to a group of people) and consisted in just a line, a website address of the form: www.domain name.com (or in)/perfectjobg.php
The domain name varied from email to email.

It came from a colleague in the US with whom I exchanged some e-mails. It was sent to an e-mail account which is not linked with proz.com, but which is a secondary address in my LinkedIn account.
The link led to another website.
What are the consequences, for him and for me?

So, does that mean that email addresses at ProZ.com got hacked?
unless we are talking of a chain reaction.
The people affected, in my case, included people completed unrelated to the translation profession: composers, MDs, etc. They likely would not know ProZ from ABC or NBC.
It might be a chain reaction, though. Wherever this started, the recipients clicking the site mentioned in the email, might have got infected, and exposed their email list to the hackers. Is this possible? Several have told me that clicking the link would let to nowhere. Would it?
You may want to contact your colleague, by phone or whatever not infected media, whether he can access to his email service, whether the service is Hotmail/msn and whether he ever sent to or received an e-mail from me.

Seems to me your computer has been infected by some virus/malware that sends spam to all the addresses it could find in your computer...

This is what happened and how I handled it:
This morning my email was blocked when I tried to log in. Wrong password, the system said. My computer is encrypted and McAfee was functioning. I reinitialize the system to an earlier date from the control panel to a date when the email was OK. Again, no access, wrong password. I could not change the password, as I did not have access, but I tried to reset it from outside. Message: "Another person is using the account". Was asked for an alternative address to verify identity (I had two additional addresses associated with my email account, one I did not even remember the name, much less the password; the other, my wife's subaccount). From her computer I tried to reset, but the email from msn sent me to her account, not to mine.
Finally, I call my "nerd-in-residence", my youngest son who works at AT&T, who was able to reset my email. I do not know yet what he did, but I will check with him tomorrow. Email is fine now.
A friend suggested, much more knowledgeable than I in computer, that it sounded a hacking through msn (Hotmail, by other name) server. The only thing that I can say is that hacking sounds a reasonable explanation.

Either hackers were very active yesterday night attacking U.S. users' email accounts or when one clicks on the link to "perfectjobg.php" his or her computer is infected propagating the hacking. Check with your friend and asked him or her what email service is using.
Apparently, whatever is, it is easy to overcome, but I may be wrong.
