Hi everyone,
There are at least two ProZ.com translators who have been translating the book by M.G.Kains 'Culinary Herbs' just to receive checks for the amount that's much higher than requested. No need to say the addresses on the check and envelope do not match the ''outsourcer's'' info, and yes, it's an outright scam. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other people who are working on the same translation right now, maybe even in a different language pair (ours was English to Russian), so this is a word of warning.
If you've seen anyone asking a KudoZ question that sounded like from a book on culinary herbs, you may also want to attract that person's attention to this post.

Out of curiosity, do you know if the alleged scammer in this case is a Proz user/member?

Glad you brought it up. This person, who claims to be a translator himself, contacted me. I could not find him on the ProZ directory or anywhere, and the address that he gave me after I asked for it is in downtown Miami with restaurants, etc. - no resident-looking buildings.
It seemed suspicious, so I asked for a partial payment in advance. He got back to me a day later saying that would be fair, and his lawyer would contact me. I did not hear from the "lawyer."
