Dear all,

I thought I would warn everyone of a scam, which some of you may have received too.

I received a request for a translation yesterday, replied asking for the document, deadline, etc. and received the document this morning with the following:

Dear all,

I thought I would warn everyone of a scam, which some of you may have received too.

I received a request for a translation yesterday, replied asking for the document, deadline, etc. and received the document this morning with the following:

Thanks for getting back to me and sorry for the late response. The attached document is for a seminar am attending this October and I hope its safe with you? The deadline for this translation is between 2 to 3 weeks. So, review it and get back to me with a price quote. Also, will like to let you know what the mode of payment will be through a bank cheque. I prefer pay-pal but I had some problems with my account and have not been able to rectify it yet. So, I think a bank cheque is another option I can present. I will make out the payment to you as soon as we agree on the terms of the contract. Here is my details for you to draw up an invoice or a contract aggrement of sort:
[Name]
6211 Marguerite Street,
Vancouver,
V6M 3L2
Canada.
253 2429 624

NB; please get back to me with your details[name, address and phone number] if you are okay with these terms so as to get going on the job. Hope to have a pleasant working relationship with you. Best Regards.
Elena.

I tried to search for the person on Google and when, as a last attempt, I entered the phone number given, I found a thread on Translators' Cafe, clearly denouncing the scam, quoting a similar e-mail to the one I received but with a different name and address. Only the phone number is the same.

Please spread the word to colleagues.

Best wishes,

Karine

Same here. Oct 11, 2011

Thank you for your post, Karine.

I have received the same email with the exception thhat this person claims to have found me on Twitter. Since I don't have a Twitter account, the detection of this scam was easy.

Any time someone claims to have problems with PayPayl it's almost always a sign that this is a scam and that the sender is only trying to collect personal data for the purpose of selling it.

Best,
Thayenga

No contact information Oct 11, 2011

The tip-off is they give you no contact information other than some dodgy email address.

You don't want to work for someone who doesn't supply this information up front.

Telephone number. Oct 12, 2011

The area code of the telephone number is the Tacoma/Seattle area, not Vancouver, which is a 604 area code.

Also, nobody in North America uses a telephone format of XXX-XXXX-XXX. It is always XXX-XXX-XXXX.

LOL Oct 12, 2011

I live less than two km from the address given, and it's in one of this city's most exclusive neighbourhoods! Certainly anyone located at such an address (residential by the way) ought to have a better command of English than that! And the 253 area code is not from anywhere around here! Maybe I should pop round to that addy and see who lives there, and alert them about this. Funny how nearly all these scams read as if there were only about two or three different authors worldwide writing them.

Got curious and googled the address...the house is for sale or already sold (3.8M!). HD tour of the interior at http://www.vopenhouse.ca/video/3268_marguerite/. Nice digs! My guess is that the scammers pull addresses randomly from real estate listings. Pretty sure it's not the scammer's addy. If it is, they're toast! And you'll see them on Dumbest Criminals some day.

Or maybe that's their office at the 66-second mark...

An old scam Oct 12, 2011

... payment will be through a bank cheque.

...which will be for more than the required amount, necessitating a refund. A classic "advanced fee" scam.

...ought to have a better command of English than that!

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_fraud#Bad_English, the "bad English" is a deliberate part of the scam.
