Seems to me that if you want to "catch" this person, you will need to get their real information (bank details or whatever), presumably from the agency working with them, before you contact yahoo to get their account closed. Once that happens, they might just run because they've obviously been found out. They might not be your problem anymore but they'll be on to the next scam and the next person will have to start from scratch trying to sort of the mess.

so they may already see they have been caught and run away.
Hopefully the police department specializing in Internet crime has better systems to track them down, than those that we already know or imagine.

I have reported it to the police and to yahoo. The police may not be able to identify the person, but I would be covered against any claims resulting from bad translations done in my name. The agent already challenged them by email this morning, so I imagine they have taken on a different identity already. The police advised me to put a warning about this on my site and profile.

They copied her entire cv and used a non-existant address in Germany to make it look as real as possible. Anyone who speaks German would have noticed that the name used is alter... Anyone who speaks German would have noticed that the name used is alternately Schmid and Schmidt, so that gives it away a little bit.
At the time I was curious as to how the scheme would work, so I posed as a client and had the fake NS translate a small piece for me. It came back relatively quickly and in good quality (too bad for the colleague that was probably scammed), with an invoice without address, to be paid via Paypal. I responded with a request for a proper invoice, which came, but with the non-existant German address on it. No bank details. I wrote back to point out the wrong address, got one reminder and that was it. I got the impression that e-mail correspondence came from Hong Kong, but I can't remember why.
Which is the reason I wouldn't worry about it too much. If Paypal is the only means of acceptable payment, they won't get far. Very unlikely that they would grab any of your clients. Since they are mass-mailing all translation agencies they can get the e-mail address of, it might possibly be a good idea to do one mass mailing yourself to rectify matters. Who knows that something good may come off it.

I know two Argentine women with the same first name and same last name who work for competing translation agencies that are based in the same U.S. state. And it's a moderately uncommon name.

I am also being impersonated by the same person. I have reported it to Proz.com but two days later, I am still waiting to hear from them.
I will not give details here but suffice it to say that he/she has a profile on Proz.com apparently verified and, worse still, posted a job via the Jobs Board asking for replies to the e-mail address Helen mentions. I have sent these links to Helen privately.

How is that possible?
I feel terrible because I spent a weekend on this psychology job, not nice to be used like this..

The person's IP address is in Beijing, China. This was corroborated by their profile in that it claimed to be in Scotland yet showed GMT+8. PM me if you want more details. They posted a DE>EN 4000-word psychology job on proz on 02 April 2011 using that profile. You will have to contact the other 2 who were swindled to find who the end client was.

Has anyone contacted site staff providing them email addresses and IPs? Folks, discussing this in the forums doesn't help much. In the meantime, the scammer could be effectively blocked with your help, but if you haven't told the staff, he keeps fooling people.
