Dear All,
Some time ago, I saw a project on Translatorsbase.com for a project called Moral and Ethics with over 11.000 words. I submitted my bid, agreed on a price with the client and got the job.
He explained that he needed the translated thesis within a certain period of time and would pay me upfront as he is a private person and wanted to make sure that the translation is done in time.
2 days later, I saw the exact same project listed by an agency on proz.com... See more
Dear All,
Some time ago, I saw a project on Translatorsbase.com for a project called Moral and Ethics with over 11.000 words. I submitted my bid, agreed on a price with the client and got the job.
He explained that he needed the translated thesis within a certain period of time and would pay me upfront as he is a private person and wanted to make sure that the translation is done in time.
2 days later, I saw the exact same project listed by an agency on proz.com. I contacted the agency at once, explained the situation and they closed the job. We found out that the client's name and adress were the same, same word count, same title. The agency contacted the client but he never responded.
I contaced him as well and he wrote that he had no idea and he had not asked an agency for help. I wrote him that I would not start the project unless he would pay me upfront as I feared a scam. A few days ago, a check arrived with a much larger amount in GBP as we had agreed upon. I had written him clearly my terms of payment and made him aware that I would not cash a check in GBP as I am living in Germany but he could use a safe SEPA transfer or even Paypal.
I stayed in contact with the agency and we both think it is a scam. So please be aware and stay away from an UK based client with a project on Moral and Ethics...which is kind of funny to use for a scam! ▲ Collapse

Sounds like a typical "advance fee" scam.
Be warned that even PayPal may not be safe in cases like this, since in the case of a fraud they can actually reverse the deposit to your bank account and take it out again. Insisting on a bank transfer is safer.

I think that too. I had the same issue, but never went further than telling the client that I don't want to be paid by check. When I saw the add on proz.com I wrote to ProZ and told them about the situation, but they didn't consider it spam at that point. I assume the agency that posted the job is ok. Either way, I also checked the text that person sent me and they are copy-paste from different articles from internet. So I would advise to be careful, cause more and more scams appear.

I didn't know that they can actually reverse payments with Paypal.
