cat vocabulary Jan 16, 2009

What I want to know is, why do we only have translations into "human" for one word in the cat's vast vocabulary?

What is the translation--in any human language--of, for example, the plaintive "brrrroop? brrrrroop? brrrroop?" meaning roughly "I am bored and need some company," often said whilst wandering aimlessly about the house at 2 am?

Poor kitty lol Jan 16, 2009

Well, my cat must be confused at this point. Because I am Danish, she was born in Italy and now we live in the USA
However, she "speaks a lot!!!" and I swear when you chase her, I can hear her giggle!! It is the strangest sound ever.

say "myaow" or "miau", but when they are in their mating season, which BTW happens several times a year, they say "miiiaaaaaaauuuw"

I likee cats very much too and have several around.

I also love cats, and the ones in Afghanistan say "miau" regardless of what part of the country they live, or if their owner is speaking Dari or Pashto...

Also, we think they have seven lives

in addition, it is said if a cat falls, no matter from which skyscraper in the world, they will always stand on four feet

Japanese cats Jan 17, 2009

Japanese cats say にゃ~ (nyaa) or にゃん (nyan).

You can even express cat speech in the language by ending sentences with のにゃ~ (no nyaa), そうにゃんだ (so nyan da) and such.

'Now' suits them perfectly Jan 17, 2009

After all, cats are quite impulsive creatures and they do know how to stand up for their rights. They live in the moment. And they say 'Now' all the time:
-What do we want?
-We want that door open!
-When do we want it?
-We want it NOW! And until you open it, we are here to now now.

So, a combination of Arabic phonetics and English semantics describes the cat language perfectly well

Turkish cats have 9 lives, by the way.

My little girl and her antics Jan 17, 2009

I have a cat and she is crazy! Although she's an adult, about three years old, she's a kitten at heart! Energetic, mischievous, playfull...you get the idea.

In America, cats have nine lives.

It's true! The cat I had when I was a child fell from the window of our eighth-floor apartment. He was OK...

I love cats too, but for some weird reason developed a severe allergy to them in my 20-s. And now my 7-year old daughter is begging for a kitten. I've tried to tell her that dogs are more fun, but she insists on getting a cat. I am not sure know how I will handle this one yet... An allergy-free genetically-modified hypoallergenic cat?
