If you look at the EN-ES job board, you will find a job offer that expects to pay the lucky translator less than 0.008 EUR! and of course it already has over 20 bidders...

Shame, shame, shaaaaaame

Unbelievable!!! Apr 12, 2011

I saw that job posting and, out of curiosity, waited a few minutes to see if there was a response. To my surprise there were bidders. Unbelievable!

Decimal point error? Apr 12, 2011

This very much looks like a decimal point error, i.e. 0.08 instead of 0.008 euros.

makes ca. 0.01 Euro per word. I did receive English-Spanish translation offer at this rate, from a translator in Cuba...

Yeah, I rather spend my time doing something else than working for peanuts. I mean, 35GBP for over 4000 words, the time you invest translating that could so much better spent going for a ride, walking the dog, etc.
But some people really need the money.

Yo don't know what the bids were Apr 12, 2011

You surely expect all bidders to bid for the outsourcer's rate, but in fact you can bid for whatever rate you wish. I have often sent bids for my usual rate, just so that the customer knows what a normal rate is. I am quite sure very many of the bidders you saw have quoted at their rate.

The way things are going these days Apr 12, 2011

The other day, someone in Ireland contacted me to ask whether I was interested in translating some certificates for EUR 0.02 per word. That's not a whole lot more than EUR/GBP 0.008 per word, so I can well believe that the latter was no mistake!

It won't surprise me if, sooner or later, agencies start charging translators to work for them, as I imagine that some younger translators desperate to find a way into the profession might be open to this (I can picture the adverts now - "va

Or maybe I shouldn't joke about it!

you can bid a higher amount Apr 12, 2011

It happened that I saw a job offer with a very low rate, but I thought that I had not anything to loose in bidding a higher amount. So did I, supporting my bid with my cover letter and resume and motivating my high rate with the fact that in Europe, the cost of living is higher than other places.

They will most likely get what they pay for Apr 13, 2011

and this will either end with a client that is unsatisfied with a poor translation, or they will have to pay an editor to spend a lot of time fixing up the translation.

It's possible they will get lucky and a good translator new to the field will end up working for them. S/he will probably do the minimal amount of work possible at low rates before switching to better paying clients.
