Rates for formatting powerpoint charts

I have a document to translate that includes a substantial number of charts that will have to be recreated in powerpoint, then imported into a word document. I'm not sure what to charge for the extra work this would involve, or how to charge (ie. hourly, by chart, a percent surcharge on the total). Does anyone have suggestions and/or experience in this matter?

If the charts already exist in PP why not just make copies of the PP files and translate them that way?

Word 2004 can count the no. of words in a PP file, though I don't think subsequent versions of MSWord can do that (there's progress for you....)

I have received the file as a pdf, and do not anticipate receiving the original powerpoint files, so I would have to completely recreate the charts. I'm looking at other options, like just copying and pasting, then overlaying text boxes, which wouldn't be as time consuming. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to get the original pp file.

I think you're going to have to go back to the client and identify with them exactly what they want. If you really have to recreate these charts then I think an hourly rate is the only sensible option, but I'd agree a reasonable number of hours with the client in advance: no point spending ten hours on them and finding they're only expecting to pay you for two (try doing one and see how long it takes you as a starting point for the negotiation). Equally, might they be happy with cutting and pasting the original charts in the document with a translation of the labels etc. provided underneath?
