Adding words to spellchecker Thread poster: TimGutteridg (X)

I'm working with memoQ 4.019, but am unable to add words to the spellchecker. (I'm using Hunspell rather than MS Word.) Does anyone know whether there is a way to do this, or is this a bug waiting for a fix? | | |
This functionality is missing, as far as I know. Let's see when it will be added. | | | TimGutteridg (X) United Kingdom Local time: 21:42 English + ... TOPIC STARTER
Setting up an "ignore list" seems to be the only way to activate the "add" option in the spellchecker. This is fine for proper nouns and the like, which you might not want to add to your general spellchecker, and which are often client specific. However, it doesn't seem like a great way of addressing the shortcomings in the spellchecker itself. (For example, Hunspell seems to have almost zero tolerance of any kind of hyphenation in English and, inevitably, only has limited coverage of technical ... Hello Tim and Epameinondas,
I'm not sure I understand the complaints and what exact functionality you are missing. You can add words to skip, that is the same thing that is offered by Word etc.
Actually, memoQ is pretty flexible there: you can create as many lists as you want, and can easily share them with others.

Maybe I didn't explain this too well.
The hunspell dictionaries obviously don't include lots of more obscure words and, for example, tend to identify hyphenated and some compound words as errors (e.g., project-specific). At present, as I understand it, I have two options. I can select Skip (but that only ignores for the current check). Or I can add the word to an ignore list. (But this means that I then have to include the ignore list in all future projects.)

I guess the solution is to have a 'general' ignore list for items that are not in the spellchecker but which are not client or project-specific, and project or client-specific ignore lists for proper names, etc. However, this seems a bit fiddly, and I would prefer to be able to add the 'general' terms directly to the spellchecker, rather than having to manage them through ignore lists. ▲ Collapse | | | simon tanner Italy Local time: 22:42 Italian to English + ... skip/ignore and add not the same | Mar 8, 2010 |
Agree completely, Tim. It's very annoying. Skipping may be useful if you have a proper noun, for example, that you're not likely to meet again, but if you deal with a lot of technical texts, you want to be able to add words to the dictionary and speed up the spellcheck, without getting bogged down with loads of false hits.
If you don't understand what's missing Gergely, just try spellchecking in Word... | | | TimGutteridg (X) United Kingdom Local time: 21:42 English + ... TOPIC STARTER Ignore list is not a substitute for adding to spelling dictionary | Mar 9, 2010 |
If anyone at MemoQ is reading, maybe this will help you understand the problem. The following is a selection of the words added to my ignore list on my current project:

biopharmaceutical
Australian-Swiss
immunoglobulin
dollar-based

The first three items are all parts of client-specific proper names. The first of these, Instituto, is a term which in other contexts would be translated. These strike me as the kind of items which should be handled through ignore lists.
However, the rest of the items (including the euro symbol!) are more general. Rather than managing these by deciding which list to add them to, I would rather just add them direct to the spelling dictionary. So I would really like two options in the spellchecker: "add to dictionary" and "add to ignore list". This would be a huge improvement.
As for the advice that I can "create as many lists as I want", please remember that memoQ is a tool to help us get our translations done. When translation tools start involving us in this kind of maintenance work (think SDLX format painting) then translators begin to wonder if the tool is there to help us, or if we are there to help the tool run properly! ▲ Collapse | | | Eppo Schaap Netherlands Local time: 22:42 Member (2003) German to Dutch + ...

Agree! | | | Hunspell problem or MemoQ? | Apr 7, 2011 |
So, if I undertand, a hunspell dictionary can not be "feeded"? As I can do for example in Word?
In Word (or also here in the browser) if I right click in a wrong written word I can see the correct spelled, or similar, words on the top. If I make the same in MemoQ would I have also this option?

Where are my old ignore lists? Spellchecking in MemoQ never was much good anyway, but now this! Makes me wonder what the point of making those lists is, if they cannot be transferred to the new version. Come MemoQ 6 we may have to do it all over again. Bugger.
I am slowly reverting back to SDL Studio. It isn't heaven there either, but MemoQ is just too geeky for me and Studio at least has incorporated some REALLY useful stuff for the common translator. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Adding words to spellchecker Wordfast Pro |
