日英翻訳の資格について

日本で日英や英日の翻訳を行っている皆さんへの質問です。

日本の翻訳会社に応募したり、レートの交渉をしたりする際に役立つ資格などはご存知ですか？
（もちろん、自分が対応する分野の資格を持っているといいと思いますが、主に「翻訳」の資格について聞きたいです。）

例えば、アメリカではAmerican Translators Association Certificationがありますが、海外の資格なので日本の翻訳会社にあまり知られていないのかなと思いました。

ご存知の方いましたら教えてください！

Do you recommend having an ATA certificate ? Mar 9, 2022

すいません、日本に住んでないので、ご質問には答えられないのですが、逆に質問させてください。

I'm a Japanese native speaker living in U.S., trying to be a EN>JA translator.
But I am having hard time to find a constant stream of decent jobs.
I heard about American Translators Association Certification. Do you have one?
Did it actually help you to get better jobs? Would you recommend having one?

Don't have ATA cert, but probably useful for those who work for US clients Mar 10, 2022

Hi Kuro-san,

No, I don't have the ATA cert yet but am thinking about trying for it. I know it is very good to have for translators who are doing business in the US, but since most of my clients are in Japan I'm doubtful about whether they are even really aware of the ATA cert.

やはり、日本の翻訳会社でしたらJTFの「ほんやく検定」が一番有名だと思います。
2級以上であれば、応募時のトライアルテストが免除になる会社も結構ありますし、
JTFの検定合格者リストに名前が掲載されるので、そのリスト経由で翻訳会社側から接触があって、有利な条件で取引できるのではと思います。

American Translators Associationには以前に加盟していて、オンラインディレクトリにプロフィールを載せていましたが、
たまに日本の翻訳会社からもフリーランス翻訳者応募のお誘いがありました。

ATA年次会議やIJET（日本翻訳者協会が主催する年次会議）でATA certification examのセッションに出席し、グレーダー（ATA certification examを作成し、採点し、合否を決める方々）のお話を聞きましたが、ATA certificationを持っていても意味がないと実感しました。私自身、ATA自体退会しました。

「ATAのディレクトリ経由で毎日のように打診が来る」、「カリフォルニア州などで婚姻証明などの翻訳ではATA-certifiedの人が翻訳したものしか受け入れていないからATA認定を持っていると必ず役に立つ」、「レートをかなり強気に設定できる」など説明され、グレーダーの方は受験を熱心に勧めておられました。
その後、コロナ禍になり、英日・日英のいずれのグレーダーの方も、コロナウイルスの影響でほとんどの方がPPPを受け取られていました。

翻訳で生活できていない方が作成・採点する認定試験など意味があるとは思えません。実際の試験の内容も、実務ではまず出て来ないようなパッセージばかりです。
毎日色んな会社から打診が仮に来たとしても、急ぎの案件で、ある程度の能力が保障された翻訳者に手っ取り早くアサインしたい場合はATA認定を持っている人に接触したいと会社側は感じるでしょうが、その後コンスタントに案件をまかせてもらえるかどうかは別問題だと思います。
婚姻証明の翻訳なども、個人による依頼ですし、コンスタントに需要がある案件ではないでしょう。 ▲ Collapse
