I'd like to improve my ability to understand spoken foreign language (English in my case) with the help of movies and recorded series, like Simpsons. I have subtitles which I can switch on/off. Right now i can understand 50-80% of Simpsons.

What is the best way to do it?

1) Watch the whole episode without subtitles, then watch two more times and try to get the rest, then switch on subtitles?

2) Or is it better to stop the player whenever there is something I do not understand, switch on subtitles, watch the difficult part again, and only then continue without subtitles?

I found method 2) is not much fun, because I feel like receiving a punishment every time I have to stop the show because of my poor ability...

Suggestion Dec 6, 2004

Why not watch the show with the subtitles, and only look at them if there is something you didn't understand? That's what I do when I go to the movies to see a foreign film. The idea is to follow the dialogue, and only read the subtitles when needed.
My two cents.

You admit that English is a foreign language to you. If I were you I would remove English as your "native language" on your profile.

And when you (Milos) modify your profile I would recommend that you remove the link to a Web site (allegedly yours) which merely advertises Web site design.

I simply said that I need to improve my understanding of spoken English. I did not explain why - sorry for that. I have problems understanding spoken English and my native tongue too, simply because my hearing is impaired and I do not use hearing aid yet although I probably should wear one.

This has nothing to do with my command of English in written form.

Sorry, for getting off topic, but you just can't advertise that English is your native language when it isn't. It isn't fair to those who are native English speakers.
