Dear collegues,

I’m about to start working for a new agency on a long interpreting assignment (2 months). Given the length of time of the project, I’m thinking of what to request in terms of payment conditions (we haven’t discussed the topic yet). The offer includes expense reimbursement and, of course, a monthly amount (based on the number of work hours). I was thinking of asking a payment in advance for the expenses (I’m going to live in very expensive city for a long time

I was thinking of asking a payment in advance for the expenses (I’m going to live in very expensive city for a long time!) and the payment for the first month at the end of it. What do you think about this? The agency is rated in the BB (average of 4,7, with a ‘2’ and a ‘3’), it seems ok (however, the agency that is organising this is a 'subsidiary' company of the first agency, so no direct comment on this company exists and in the job offer, requests about payment practise must be sent to the agency rated in the BB, it says). Of course, I’ll require a contract clearly stating conditions and terms (however, unfortunately, as I experienced, this does not automatically imply that you get paid). What are your opinions about that? I’ve never worked with an agency I didn’t know on such a long-term project, so I’m a bit confused. Any ideas/comments will be welcome!

Thanks in advance

I would suggest weekly payments. If, God forbid, you are left high and dry after one week of your immaculate service, it is one thing; and it is quite different, if it's a MONTH, it would make a world of difference, don't you think?
In my experience, I used to stick to weekly payments, and although I have never had any major problems with them agencies, I felt sort of insured against large-scale losses anyway.

HIH, danya

Hi dear collegue,
thanks very much for your reply and suggestion. This is exactly what I fear and the idea of weekly payment is a very good one indeed. However, following a phone call with the agency, I'm no longer sure about accepting the job as it appears different from how it was initially described...but thanks again, it is a valuable piece of advice that will be useful on future occasions!
Bye
Valentina
