Sergio Viaggio, Head of the Interpreting Division at the UN's office in Vienna, has written a new article regarding translation that can be extrapolated to our interpreting world.

Sergio Viaggio, Head of the Interpreting Division at the UN's office in Vienna, has written a new article regarding translation that can be extrapolated to our interpreting world.
A taste of Sergio's words:
"If what is pertinent is that the new interlocutor find out what the original has said right down to hairs and distinguishing marks (as in the case of the jury before the accused) then, if necessary, to heck with the equivalency of effect. If what is pertinent is that the new interlocutor be “grabbed” by a product, then, if need be, to heck with equivalency of propositional content. If what is pertinent is that the new interlocutor only find out what interests him or her, then to heck with superfluous content, and without a second thought. If what is pertinent is that the new interlocutor find the text “easy reading”, then to heck with the labyrinthine turnings of form, and let your hand not tremble. If what is pertinent is that the new interlocutor understand English Law from the standpoint of Roman Law, then to heck with Saxon idiosyncrasies. If what is pertinent is that the new interlocutor verify the differences between Common Law and Roman Law, then the task is to reproduce them in minute detail. Magnetic North is always the type of comprehension of the new interlocutor, although frequently from the conflictive viewpoints of the author, of the paying customer, of the one to whom the client entrusts the translation and of the one whom he/she pays for it (whenever these are different persons), and of the interlocutor him/herself. Most times, the translator will look for some kind of happy medium."
