This thread is part of the Translator playground: a place for translators to have fun, to network, to learn, and to hone their translation or linguistic skills. See the announcement here.

Need a quick break from work? In this forum translators and language professionals can share quotes about translation, tongue twisters and word plays, translation challenges, etc.

All are welcome to participate and to add new items to this and the other areas of the Translator playground; have fun with it! If you need help or would like to propose an addition to the Translator playground, contact site staff through the online support system.

I mistook Norwegian for Swedish, but other than that... 10 languages. Happy International Translation Day!

Admittedly, there were a couple of gambles. Like Czech and Slovak, which I could easily have swapped. But then again, I correctly identified Malay and Indonesian, only had them switched.

including some very lucky guesses, and recognition based on the alphabet/script only.

Jan-Willem, I had no trouble identifying Bahasa Indonesia of course, but I didn't know there was a difference between BI and Malaysian (no assimilation).
BTW, I think "Malay" is wrong. Malay is the collective term for Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian), Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian), and probably a few other variants.

Cheers,

Hans

Why have Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic been omitted?

Some languages are not listed simply because I did not receive the information I requested on time (i.e. before September 30). However, as I mentioned in my post if you see that your language(s) are not listed, you can send me and email to romina at proz.com with the translation of the words "translator" and "translation" and I'd gladly add them.

I was also wondering why Finnish is not there. There was one that I thought might be Spanish, but later I found more that looked like Spanish to me… so only 11…

By the way, what is the second word supposed to mean? Is that supposed to mean the process of translation, or the end product of translation? The Chinese word chosen can only mean the latter even though a different word that can mean both exists. Is there a reason for this?

I got 19 right. Mixed up the Cyrillic languages and also the Balkan languages - had Croatian instead of Serbian, for example. The Indian languages were also a problem - I had Bengali instead of Urdu. I also put Maltese instead of Albanian. I usually made use of diacritics, such as the "cut L" which is characteristic of Polish, as in the name "Malgorzata" (I have seen the L sometimes cut and sometimes uncut). That's very nice! Thank you! Sep 30, 2012

I identified 27. Some languages are too exotic for me, but there are linguists able to recognize up to 100 languages.
Please stop asking why some languages were omitted (you can find the reply if you read the thread). It's a game!
