My two cents for Italian May 16, 2011

1.- Come rain or shine. (If a person does something come rain or shine, they do it regularly, whatever the circumstances.)

2.- The lull before the storm. (This expression refers to a period of unnatural calm before a difficult time or violent activity.)

3.- A bolt from the blue. (To refer to something as a bolt from the blue means that it happened completely unexpectedly.)

Strike while the iron is hot May 17, 2011

Amazing how many languages (maybe 7) mentioned an idiom equivalent to "Strike while the iron is hot", which brings to mind an image of a medieval ironsmith doing his thing, creating swords to fight dragons probably.
In Portuguese we have the opposite, "striking on cold iron", which means that you are wasting your time trying something.

5. Make hay while the sun shines — Kal dzelzi, kamēr karsta (= Forge the iron while it is hot).
