Private cheques in payment of jobs for agencies? Thread poster: Eva Blanar

Lately I received several private cheques in payment of jobs I did for translation agencies abroad.
I find this is strange and, at the same time, it is also very disadvantageous for me: in Hungary it is extremely expensive to cash a foreign cheque in (USD 30-50 per cheque) and banks are quite reluctant to deal with non-bank, private cheques. (In exact figures, for a job of GBP320, they transferred only GBP274, the rest shall have been their bank costs). Let me add that this was not some dubious no-name company, but a prestigious translation agency, with proper PO etc.
My question(s): do you have similar experience (or am I unlucky)? What would you advise me to do?
One final note: I would love to be paid through my ProZ.com wallet, but no agency seems to be ready to use that channel - what is your experience? ▲ Collapse | | | lien Netherlands Local time: 01:33 English to French + ... Money Bookers | Aug 30, 2003 |

sometimes find it to cumbersome to pay small foreign bills from our Agency account- by local Law to do this (if you're not a legal entity), we have to have employment Agreement with you (signed by you in person), etc, etc, and if any irregularities are found out by IRC, we are risking a fine in an amount of the transfer sum, so sometimes I transfer the money to foreign translators as a private payment simply as "by agreement".

So, IMHO, example mentioned by you, speaks not of any swindle by an Agency- but on the contrary- it shows the effort of an Agency to keep its word notwithstanding various bureaucratic restrictions. They just as easily could demand from you to came in person to sign a job contract, or at least, to send them a job contract, signed by you in the presence of a Notary…
These are wire transfers, though, cheques are rarely used in this country.
As to my experience with PayPal- none, as it doesn't function in this country and I believe it doesn't in Hungary, too, I have tried to make our Western clients to pay via Moneybrokers, but to no avail- they prefer send cheques (with whom our experience is similar to yours) or by wire transfer, accompanied by loud whines about the costs...

I guess it's a good illustration of why it's best for us all to agree payment methods, who will pay charges and everything else before undertaking the job (difficult though it sometimes is to remember, in some pre-job rushes).
High banking charges might be some incentive to encourage clients to use Moneybookers or Paypal (where possible) as a cheaper alternative in situations like this, although using them seems to be something that "some do and some don't" - for no more reason than it's ... However, I've noticed that different banks charge different fees for cashing in foreign checks. I suspect the same applies for Hungary. So my advice to you is: do not avoid payments by checks, as sometimes fees are lower than for wire transfers. Rather check for other banks charging lower fees for cashing in the checks.
As for Paypal, this solution is not yet functional in Romania.

I have the same problem. I just could not find anyone to cash a cheque in $US for me. The only way, everyone told me, is to bank the cheque. I have done so a month ago. It still has not cleared. The sad thing is that it is only $57 and I completed the job for this payment 3 months ago.
It is for that reason that I have decided to just only accept payments by cheque in GBP or via Paypal.

Some companies have been kind enough to agree to either of these options in the past but others are very quick to take their business elsewhere.
Very sad indeed!

It's not available any more, and it's a pity. | | | Deposit of the checks? | Sep 1, 2003 |
Hi all!
Have you checked the possibility of not cashing the check but \"deposit\" it to your account? I think that in this case there are no expenses or fees at all (except for a bad check). Of course the Bank never loses: it makes the deposit with a value date of let\'s say 30 or more days. But there are no or very low fees. Since you have a great number of checks, as you say, you can be a regular bank client and not someone who was just passing by.
