Word of mouth Aug 18, 2003

On a conference in Warsaw an official from UE Translation Service said that prices vary from 11 eurocents in Greece to 30 in Finland. I did not verify it in any way.

But seriously- is there any sort of guidelines or whatever? I saw something like that mentioned somewhere on ProZ some time ago, but I cannot find it anymore...

No guideline whatsoever Aug 19, 2003

There is one with regard to fighting late payments, but there is none with regard to rates. The EU fosters free competition and price-setting does not contribute to that.

And does lack of information contribute to free competition?

I doubt...

Quote from a EU document Aug 19, 2003

I am attaching below the prices that the EU is willing to pay to freelancers, based on a document they published online, which was brought to my attention by a colleague. I am not sure whether this refers to a particular project or applies to any translation job given to freelancers.

8. Prices or range of prices (minimum/maximum) paid:
- for Danish, the prices per page of 1500 printed characters range from EUR 45 to 99.
- for German, the prices per page of 1500 printed

Hi Laura,

One detail may have skipped your attention.
These are (ranges of) rates paid to agencies, not freelancers...

Yet, still interesting.

I think it was both freelancers and agencies Aug 19, 2003

It was a tender and I suppose it didn't matter to the EU who did the translating - freelancers working in a team or agencies - those prices refer to the rates they were willing to pay.
Anyway - if those were the rates paid to agencies, as an Italian I am even more depressed...

Oh, cheer up, Aug 19, 2003

I'm afaid that if I'll tell you local prices an Agency can charge here on Latvian domestic market to get any clients at all, you'll get a fit

Uldis

PS. But things will change as we (the referendum is yet still to come and the anti ES fraction is undertaking frantic activities, I hope they will not succeed)will join the ES next year

Yes, but you have to meet quite a few requirements Aug 19, 2003

before you're (even) entitled to submit a tender.

Go to e.g. http://ted.publications.eu.int/udl?REQUEST=Seek-Deliver&LANGUAGE=en&DOCID=66775-2003
for more details.

Yeah, Aug 19, 2003

Very civilised requirements, IMHO.
I do not envisage any problem, if you do not mention application date, of course

Yes, but I still have to pay a German rent Aug 21, 2003

Hi Uldis,

I am sure Latvian prices are very low but so are probably Lavian rents (and food etc.).

The cost of living in Italy and Germany is quite expensive, and it does not help translators to get paid the lowest rates in the whole of Europe.
