Hello. Does anybody know/use the programme "across".?
www.across.net
A client asked me to consider the possibility of using it.
What do you think about it?

It does the "standard" CAT tool operations (term extraction included), but in its own way. Uses SDLX strategy - working in a separate environment, as opposed to Trados.
You'll need to get accustomed to it. Looks quite packed with features, and it is free.
Technically, it uses MS SQL server for databasing (TM's) - problems might arise when packing your TM for the go. | | | Sonja Tomaskovic (X) Germany Local time: 03:22 English to German + ... Previous postings | Jul 4, 2006 |
I know for sure that there have been quite a few postings on across here in the forum, which - for whatever reason - I cannot find by using the forum search.
Here is one link that I found by browsing the pages manually:

My personal experience with across hasn't been that good, really. I decided to remove it from my PC because it just needed a lot of space, and each time I booted my PC it would also boot the MSSQL server, which I wasn't able to deactivate completely... I had removed it from autostart, from Services, etc. but it still popped up in my task bar.
I am glad I don't have it anymore.
Sonja
P.S. Since I have already posted my experience in another thread which I cannot find at the moment, I would be glad to give you any details in private, if you like. Just contact me through my profile.

It is not very intuitive, and I suppose it would go faster If I had taken the time to read the manual. A lot of features use keybord-combinations instead of buttons, ans you don't have access to your own files once they're delivered. The spellcheck is limited.
In fact, I don't like it much, but it doesn't mix up my PC.

Well, there is a thread from 2004, I think. If you read it already, keep in mind that none of the mistakes were removed or repaired - still same mistakes, and more important still the same speed of processing, opening, etc. However, they promised a new version by the end of August, but they have been promising this new version for a while now. If you want to find out more, e.g. about mistakes that are not mentioned in the thread, please contact me through my profile page. | | | Gloria Nobili Italy Local time: 03:22 English to Italian + ... I have been usign Across for a while and I like it a lot. It's free and offers very good value for money (or lack of in this case . I think it's easy to use and I prefer it to Trados in my day to day work. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Does anybody know/use the programme 'Across'?
