When I started freelancing almost ten years ago, I used a variety of methods to reach out to potential clients. I placed an ad in the local yellow pages (no lead whatsoever), I sent out hundreds of emails to translation agencies (this landed me a couple of jobs), but by far the most efficient way of promotion was using the features that are available on ProZ.com.

I've been a member since I started working as a translator 15 years ago (I upgraded to the Pro package a few years later), and I have a generally positive opinion of the site. Of course, many of the offers we receive in our inboxes are for very low rates, but for me that's just one of the many services the platform offers. When you start your career, you get a lot of information on the site, the forum in particular is very useful. You can also access different training courses (I have done a few, most of them were very high quality). When I first started, I answered a lot of Kudoz questions, which gets you listed higher up in the directory, which is very useful because you're then contacted directly by agencies and direct clients looking for translators. I have a few direct clients who found me on ProZ.com, I've been working with them for a long time and they offer very good rates. I don't use the site as much as I used to, but I would definitely recommend it to someone starting out as a translator. In summary, it's a useful tool for translators, as long as you take the time to look at everything it has to offer and use it to your advantage (KudoZ, directory, training courses). It won't do you any good if you just sign up and wait for something to happen, but that's true of a lot of things Oh, one last thing, I came to Translation Mastermind via ProZ.com, and I'm grateful for that.

I have been a member since 2004 and I renew every year. I have been a member of Professional Plus since the first year. I find it's a good publicity for me and Plus offers many services that are quite useful. I also use the terminology. I never look for jobs on their platform, but I receive many requests from potential outsourcers, almost every day, ready to pay what I ask for. I translate for the French Canada market, which happens to be a very vibrant market that attracts many American, and European companies as well as Asian. Every product that is imported must be translated into French for the Quebec market (not French from France) along with all government texts because there are two official languages in Canada. It’s paradise for translators.

Initially, I doubted if my membership investment would represent a benefit. Well, I broke even after 2-3 months of becoming a member!

One of the greatest things of being a ProZ.com member is being able to see the Blue Board. It's very, very helpful to see what other translators have to say.

This past year has been great. I woke up one morning deciding to go back to translating full time but I was not 100% sure that my decision was the right one. I left my "safe" English teaching job and recontacted my old clients. It didn't take long and I was soon back on track. Thanks to ProZ I have made contacts with new agencies around the world. I have met colleagues worldwide and found new friends... Words are my passion and this is the ideal job for me with growing children who love to see me around. I don't even want to think where I would have been in my career if it weren't for ProZ.com. Most probably, I would remain stuck within the boundaries of my country, trying irritatingly hard to deliver valuable service in return for dramatically low compensation. The site definitely helped me to extend my business as a freelancer. This surely helped me to "make much more money" than I earned before registration at the site. And I guess I am not the only one who met clients and established new business relations via ProZ.com.

Using ProZ.com for the past 5 years has been and is invaluable to me. It provides a forum for customers to locate a translator to fit their translation needs. When running into problems or queries, the various forums on Proz are an excellent source of advice and collegial support

When I renew, I will probably do so for another ten-year period. Let me take this opportunity to recommend ten-year membership to everybody who reads these messages. You do not have to worry about renewing each and every year. It is the best investment you can make. Highly recommended!
