Medical: Cardiology
Hypertonia or hypertension? What would you interpret? TIA.

Comment: "Guys, thank you all for the reading. I'm going to stick to literal (this is a paper to be read at a cardiologist's conference) and I'm basing this decision on a previously-described thickening of outer arterial diameter. I will also note down my doubts for the doctor's record."

Definitions:
hypertension
1. Tension or tonus that is greater than normal. 2. A condition in which the patient has a higher blood pressure than that judged to be normal. The primary factor is an increase in peripheral resistance resulting from vasoconstriction or narrowing of peripheral blood vessels.
hypertonia
The state of being hypertonic - having extreme muscular or arterial tension
Hypertrophy
A thickening of the muscle of the pumping chamber (ventricle) of the heart. This results from increased work of that chamber (the heart muscle gets large and thick with an increased work-out, just like the biceps muscle). Usually associated with obstructions in the valves or blood vessels through which the ventricle must push the blood, or with high blood pressure
-> not many differences in this context as far as I can see
Link http://www.endo-society.org/pubrelations/patientInfo/diabete... gives the connection between hypertension and D.m. Type II

wrong term usage -> see explanation below
Although one may suspect that the "Hypertonie" could denote (arterial) hypertension, it is neither hypertonia nor hypertension in this case ("konzentrisch" indicates that this cannot be a "Hyper*tonie*" but must be a "(muskuläre) Hyper*trophie*").
Correct usage in German source would be "konzentrische linksventrikuläre Hypertrophie" -> en: "concentric left-ventricular hypertrophy", IOW a muscular dilatation/enlargement of the left ventricle of the (human)heart.

Andy: Thanks for your additions but contextual usage of \"konzentrisch\" rules out \"Hypertonie\" in this case. It is correct though that higher-than-normal arterial blood pressure can lead to hypertrophy in the longer term - but that\'s not what\'s meant here.

To further support my argument on incorrect usage:
Try Google search for
- \"linksventrikuläre konzentrische Hypertrophie\" (2 hits) and \"konzentrische linksventrikuläre Hypertrophie\" (6 hits)
vs
- \"konzentrische linksventrikuläre Hypertonie\" and \"linksventrikuläre konzentrische Hypertonie\" (0 hits)

Note to asker: Clearly the wrong choice since in the first case (the context cited in your question proper) it\'s \"hypertrophy\" while in the second (i.e. your added remark) it is (arterial) \"hypertension\" associated with diabetes. Please try Google search as above and check sources (one of them contains docs of Deutscher Kardiologentag) in your own interest since you mentioned that the document will be read at a cardiologist\'s conference.

Und noch einmal: Es gibt keine \"konzentrische Hypertonie\".
