French term
écrêtage de pointe
French to English
Tech/Engineering
Energy / Power Generation
electricity generation
Any ideas for this expression? I've come across load levelling, but I just wanted to check if that was OK or if anyone had any better suggestions?

peak shaving
Not 100% sure it's 100% applicable in your case, but by extension it would fit.
PEAK-SHAVING: Using sources of energy, such as natural gas from storage, to supplement the normal amounts delivered to customers during peak-use periods. Using these supplemental sources prevents pipelines from having to expand their delivery facilities just to accommodate short periods of extremely high demand.
PEAK-SHAVING FACILITY: A facility which stores natural gas to be used to supplement the normal amount of gas delivered to customers during peak-use periods.

PEAK-SHAVING. Reduction of the amount of electricity drawn from the utility grid during utility-designated peak time periods

PEAK SHAVING
During times of peak demand, supplies from sources other than normal suppliers are used to reduce demand on the system – eg, storage from a salt cavern.

Battery Energy Storage — Energy storage using electrochemical batteries. The three main applications for battery energy storage systems include spinning reserve at generating stations, load leveling at substations, and PEAK SHAVING on the customer side of the meter

Just as a battery or a spare supply of gas "fills the gap" when required, so costly fossil-fuel power staitions will make up the difference.

Ah! Try Googling "peak shaving" and "écrêtEMENT"!

: I think "peak clipping" is also used - not sure what the difference is between "pk clipping" and "pk shaving", if any. Tony will probably be able to inform us.//Bien sûr! Only poodles are shaved!

Peke clipping is when you have your Pekinese toiletté. See other question.//Only poodles? You've been watching the wrong films.

: 'clipping' is certainly used when talking at signals level, but can't say as I've personally encountered it in power generation.

peak lopping
One usually talks about "peak lopping" when gas turbines or hydraulic storage systems are brought in to cope with a bumper edition of Coronation Street or Christmas lunch. Unlike nuclear stations, these can be fired up in a matter of minutes.

: I have seen both these terms used quite widely, with no obvious differentiation between them.
