French term

étoupe non liquefiée

French to English Medical Medical (general) abdominal surgery
In a hospital report concerning surgery on a patient with pancreatitis: "Présence d'une nécrose limitée à la racine du mésocolon transverse avec une ouverture de l'arrière cavité de l'épiploon et visuation d'étoupe non liquifiée." The photocopy is a bit faint so I may be misreading it, or it may be a typo, but "étoupe non liquifiée" has me puzzled. The only references I can find give the translation as "oakum" or "tow", neither of which seem appropriate here. Any ideas?? TIA.

Sarah, I must say that the word is very strange and not commonly used in the medical context - is your text Swiss by any chance? If so, could be a Germanic influence.

Thank you v. much, Sue. As usual, you shed plenty of light on the conundrum. Much appreciated.
Close, Sue -- it's from Belgium. It certainly seemed a curious term to me.

unliquefied tow

tow is the term used in med. appl. and the expl. seems to be that tow was used to block a flow of some sort and it should or could have been disolved progressively, depending on the type of fibres used?? I am not sure if this was intentionnal or accidental from the context but it could make sense to someone else. Good luck.
